Sustainable Cocoa: Nurturing Growth, Protecting Forests, Empowering Communities

In 2025, the cocoa industry faces critical sustainability challenges, demanding innovative and long-term solutions. At Machu Picchu Foods, we are not just a cocoa strategic partner; we are a catalyst for transformative change. Our mission extends beyond environmental conservation to encompass social well-being and responsible sourcing throughout the cocoa supply chain. Partner with us, and you will ensure your cocoa is sourced with integrity, contributing to a significant positive impact on both the environment and society.

Regenerative Agriculture: Restoring Ecosystems for Sustainable Cocoa

As global environmental challenges intensify, regenerative agriculture emerges as a crucial strategy for ecosystem restoration, climate change mitigation, and sustainable food production. By working in harmony with nature, these practices reverse environmental degradation and build resilient agricultural systems.

This approach not only revitalizes the land but also strengthens the communities that depend on it, ensuring long-term sustainability. By adopting regenerative techniques, we can restore ecosystems, reduce carbon emissions, and pave the way for a greener future.

Our partnership with the Earthworm Foundation on the Clima-Paisaje Perú initiative exemplifies our commitment to sustainable cocoa production. This collaboration aims to capture over 12,000 tons of CO₂, rehabilitate 300 hectares of degraded soils, and enhance biodiversity, all while optimizing cocoa yields and improving farmer livelihoods.

We also utilize a sophisticated geolocation system on our cocoa farms to ensure compliance with national and international sustainability standards, guaranteeing complete cocoa traceability. This technology enables us to accurately trace the origin of our cocoa, ensuring regulatory adherence and promoting forest conservation through sustainable supply chains.

“A healthy ecosystem is the foundation of sustainable cocoa farming. By restoring soils and promoting biodiversity, we are safeguarding the land and securing the future of thousands of cocoa farmers.” – Jhonnatan Murga, Sustainability & Projects Manager.

Empowering Farmers Through Climate-Smart Training

Sustainability extends beyond environmental concerns to include empowering the individuals who cultivate the land. Capacity building is essential to this mission. We offer comprehensive training programs that equip cocoa farmers with the skills to implement deforestation-free and climate-smart practices. These programs enhance productivity, improve cacao quality, and foster a sustainable future.

We have successfully trained over 700 farmers in non-deforestation practices and organic standards, positively impacting more than 2,000 hectares. These initiatives not only boost farm productivity and soil fertility but also enable farmers to meet global sustainability benchmarks, ensuring their competitiveness in an increasingly eco-conscious market.

“By providing farmers with essential skills and knowledge, we empower them to actively combat deforestation and environmental degradation.” – Zaida Zuñiga, Sustainability Team.

Investing in Thriving Cocoa-Growing Communities

Our sustainability commitment extends to the communities that support our farms. Initiatives like Wiñay, which enhances school infrastructure, and Nuwa Muun, which empowers women entrepreneurs, drive significant social change. Over 350 students have benefited from improved educational facilities through Wiñay, while Nuwa Muun has provided 25 cocoa farmers with 140 tons of organic fertilizer, resulting in a 19% productivity increase.

By investing in education, gender equality, and community development, we are building a prosperous future for cocoa-farming families, enhancing their well-being and economic resilience.

“Sustainability is about forging lasting relationships with farmers and their communities. Our programs ensure they have the resources and support to thrive.” – Fatima Cruz, Sustainability Team
